Crop and Soil Sciences Departmental Scholarships

Crop and Soil Sciences departmental scholarships are made possible through generous contributions that recognize and encourage academic and professional achievement. They are awarded each academic year through an application process that runs every spring (typically December 1st – March 1st) and then scholarship recipients are announced in April. Students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors) majoring in Agriscience and Environmental Systems, Environmental Resource Science, Water and Soil Resources and Turfgrass Management are eligible to apply.  


Application Process

The application process for departmental scholarships has 2 steps which both need to be completed by March 1st. Late submissions will not be considered.


Step 1

Please fill out the application for College-wide scholarships. Follow the link provided below and then click on the College-wide scholarship link. We recommend that you collect the following information before starting this application:

  1. Your UGA cumulative (UGA-courses only) GPA
  2. Number of semester hours completed here at UGA, hours transferred in from another institution, and the number of hours needed for you to complete your degree
  3. Your estimated graduation date (semester/year)
  4. Awards/honors you have received while at UGA
  5. Club / organization involvement while at UGA
  6. Community service activities while at UGA
  7. Scholarships received (do not list HOPE scholarships) while at UGA
  8. Employment history while at UGA
  9. Self-improvement and professional development activities while attending UGA

Attie A. Fleming

  • Qualifications: Preference given to students majoring in Agriscience and Environmental Systems
  • Selection criteria: Financial need, academic merit (a minimum of 3.0 GPA is required)
  • Award: Up to two $1,000 scholarships awarded annually

Crop and Soil Sciences International Study Award

  • Qualifications: Crop and Soil Sciences majors participating in a University study abroad program (e.g., faculty led or exchange programs). Students may apply BEFORE a program runs and BEFORE they are accepted. However, scholarship money will not be awarded until the student is officially accepted and committed to the program. 
  • Selection criteria: Academic merit
  • Award: $1000 awarded annually 

Frederick B. And Marjorie W. Smith Scholarship in Soil Science

  • Qualifications: Crop and Soil Sciences majors with a focus on Soil Science
  • Award: Up to two $1,000 scholarships awarded annually      

J. Frank McGill "Up with Peanuts"

  • Qualifications: Junior or senior Crop and Soil Sciences major; priority given to individuals involved in the peanut industry
  • Selection criteria: Academic merit, leadership experience, and involvement in the peanut industry
  • Award: Up to two $2,000 scholarships awarded annually

Georgia State Golf Association Moncrief Scholarship ($2500)

The James B. “Monty” Moncrief Scholarships are awarded to students of turfgrass management or agronomy at the University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and students who work and live in Georgia, but attend an accredited school outside of the state. Students are interviewed by a panel that includes representatives from the GSGA Foundation and Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association.

J. Fielding Reed, Georgia Plant Food Educational Society ($2000)

Priority will be given to students focused on agronomy, horticulture, soil fertility, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and other areas related to soil fertility and plant nutrition. A student application and supporting documentation (3 letters of support, of which one must be from the applicant’s advising professor and an official transcript) is required. Due November 1st, 2024.

Jimmy and Bunny Champion Academic Achievement Award ($3000)

Priority will be given to students focused on agronomy, horticulture, soil fertility, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and other areas related to soil fertility and plant nutrition. A student application and supporting documentation (3 letters of support, of which one must be from the applicant’s advising professor and an official transcript) is required. Due November 1st, 2024.

Ray Hays Family Scholarship ($2000)

Priority will be given to students focused on agronomy, horticulture, soil fertility, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and other areas related to soil fertility and plant nutrition. Special consideration will be given to applicants who desire to pursue a career in the agricultural equipment field. A student application and supporting documentation (3 letters of support, of which one must be from the applicant’s advising professor and an official transcript) is required. Due November 1st, 2024.

GCPA Legacy Scholarship ($2000)

Priority will be given to students focused on agronomy, horticulture, soil fertility, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and other areas related to soil fertility and plant nutrition. Special consideration will be given to applicants who desire to pursue a career in the crop protection industry. A student application and supporting documentation (3 letters of support, of which one must be from the applicant’s advising professor and an official transcript) is required. Due November 1st, 2024.

R.W. Griffin Agriculture Scholarship ($5000)

Priority will be given to students focused on agronomy, horticulture, soil fertility, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and other areas related to soil fertility and plant nutrition. Special consideration will be given to a student from Georgia who is seeking a degree related to agriculture and who has a desire to pursue a career in production agriculture. Eligible applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Up to four scholarships per year may be awarded. A student application and supporting documentation (3 letters of support, of which one must be from the applicant’s advising professor and an official transcript) is required. Due November 1st, 2024.

The Soil Science Society of Georgia ($1000)

Two $1000 awards designed to support students with an interest in expanding their knowledge of soils in Georgia.

• Supports research, experiential learning (e.g., internships), networking (i.e., conference travel)

• Applicants must be currently enrolled in undergraduate program in Georgia in junior/senior year with emphasis in soil science. Applicants must be or become members of SSSGA. Awardee should attend annual meeting.

Georgia Foundation for Agriculture Scholarship (deadline March 1)

The purpose of the Georgia Foundation Scholarship for Agriculture is to assist outstanding students who plan to pursue a career focusing on agriculture and who exhibit leadership skills for active involvement in the agriculture sector.

Georgia Foundation for Agriculture: Rising College Junior/Senior Scholarship for Agriculture (deadline March 1)

This scholarship is for students pursuing an academic career focusing on agriculture and who have exhibited leadership skills and who have exhibited leadership skills and who have been actively involved in the agriculture sector while in college.
