Biography

Susanna Berg is a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. She is majoring in Agriscience and Environmental Systems with a focus on Sustainable Agriculture, and she is also pursuing a minor in Animal Science and a Certificate in Sustainability. Susanna is set to graduate in the Spring of 2025, and after completing her bachelor's degree, she plans to pursue a Master’s in Agronomy at Purdue University.

Campus Involvement

Susanna is highly engaged in campus activities. She serves as the president of the Outdoor Adventure Club, where she organizes outdoor events such as camping and backpacking for both undergraduate and graduate students throughout the year. In addition to her involvement in student organizations, Susanna contributes to on-campus research. She is currently assisting Dr. Nick Basinger in researching the effects of cover crops on weed management. This past summer, she was involved in fieldwork and research for this project, gaining valuable experience that aligns with her interest in working with cover crops in the future. Furthermore, Susanna collaborated with Dr. Lowder on research aimed at determining the optimal spacing for muscadine grapes, with funding secured through grants she personally obtained.

Favorite Aspects of CRSS

Among her many positive experiences in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Susanna particularly values the coursework. One of her favorite classes was Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition (CRSS 4590), taught by Dr. Cabrera and Dr. Malladi. She found the lectures engaging and appreciated the hands-on lab work, especially given the small class sizes. The practical skills and knowledge gained in these courses have proven essential for real-world problem-solving.
