Biography

Johanna Nordwall is a senior in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UGA where she is majoring in Environmental Resource Science. Passionate about water quality and hydrogeochemistry, Johanna is eager to build a career around water remediation. After graduating in Spring 2025, she plans to move to Honolulu, Hawaii where she will pursue opportunities in the environmental science sector, such as a role as an environmental chemist. Looking ahead, she hopes to further her education with a graduate degree in Earth Science.

Campus Involvement

Johanna is actively involved in both on- and off-campus activities. She is an active member of several organizations, including the Field Naturalist Society, the Geology Club, and the Crop and Soil Science Student Society.

Her passion for research led her to work on multiple research projects at UGA, where she gained hands-on experience in different scientific fields. She previously worked as an assistant in a microbiology lab, and she is now conducting research in the soil physics lab. Her current project is focused on determining whether soil electrical conductivity can be used to predict specific soil properties, such as bulk density and moisture, to create management zones for precision agriculture.

Beyond academics, Johanna is passionate about volunteer work. She actively contributes to the Athens community as a volunteer at the Sandy Creek Nature Center and has participated in the Rivers Alive annual waterway cleanup event.

Favorite Aspects of CRSS

One of Johanna’s favorite aspects about the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences is its growing sense of community. She appreciates how the Department has expanded its social and networking opportunities, which allow students to connect and get to know each other better. She also values the Department’s small size, which makes it easier for students to get involved with internships, research, and student jobs.

Among the many courses she has taken, Pedology (CRSS 4540) stands out as her favorite. She especially enjoyed the outdoor labs and field trips to places like Whitehall Forest, where she had the opportunity to learn in a real world setting how the landscape contributes to the formation of certain soil characteristics.
